Waves breaking on a beach

TITLE:  Waves breaking on a beach

SIZE: N/A

PRICE:  SOLD

ARTIST'S OBSERVATIONS:  Since learning to paint, I have always been attracted to the sea.  I love to watch the way it moves and breaks, and I now try so hard to capture those movements, even if I don't always succeed.  There is also the wonderful colours, again changing from moment to moment.

CARDS:  Handmade cards available.

Breaking waves on rocks

TITLE:  Breaking waves on rocks
SIZE:  N/A
PRICE:  NOT FOR SALE
ARTIST'S OBSERVATIONS:  This was one of my first attempts at a seascape, and it was inspired by a painting by Australian artist John Lovett.  If you were to compare the two pictures it would be difficult to find any real similarity, and mine is a very poor rendition of his, but it was painted with a great deal of enjoyment and I still like it.

TITLE: Seascape with text

IMAGE SIZE:  200 x 400mm

MOUNT SIZE: 300 x 500 mm in pale cream

PRICE: SOLD

ARTIST'S OBSERVATIONS: Mixed media. Once again this is an experiment in the use of watercolour ground to try to produce the texture of the sea and waves. I have used primarily watercolour for this and am wondering about trying it again in inks to see what effects I can achieve. There is a little text included in this painting to describe the colours.

Wave on shingle on Yupo paper

TITLE:  Wave breaking on shingle on Yupo paper

SIZE OF IMAGE:  300mm x 200mm

SIZE AND COLOUR OF MOUNT:  400mm x 300mm white

PRICE: £95.00 plus P & P

ARTIST'S OBSERVATIONS:  Another painting of the wave on shingle, but this time it is a completely different "beast".  Yupo paper has very different characteristics to ordinary watercolour paper as the paint does not sink into the fabric, but sits on top.  It does me good to use this paper from time to time as it is much more difficult to manage, and the paint tends to go where it wants -  not my style at all!  I also like to put the paint on quite wet, so it runs and mixes with other colours.  It takes much longer to dry, and it has to dry flat because, if not, it runs and pools in ways an artist might not want.- experience has shown this to be true, to my frustration.  Once dry, however, if the results are not as envisaged, you can use a wet brush and the paint will come off again - really quite unusual!  I enjoyed painting this and loved the way the paint has dried, often with hard edges and you can see where I have added clean water in places.  I think the Yupo has made the shingle more interesting.

SIZE OF IMAGE:  280mm x 210mm

SIZE AND COLOUR OF MOUNT:  500mm x 400mm in white.

PRICE:  £100.00

ARTIST'S OBSERVATIONS: As you may have gathered by now, I have a fascination of the sea; both the patterns it makes, but also the wonderful colours.  This wave was particularly interesting because of the lovely colour of the shoreline, and the patterns therein.  I struggled to get a strong enough tone (always difficult when using photographs), and the patterns made by the sea crashing onto the shingle was a challenge.  As the water receded from the beach it was creamy, with hints of the shingle peeping through.  There is a second painting of this scene as well.
