Gold Hill Shaftesbury

TITLE:  Gold Hill Shaftesbury

IMAGE SIZE: 290mm x 220mm

MOUNT SIZE:  500mm x 400mm in white

PRICE:  SOLD

ARTIST'S OBSERVATIONS:  Watercolour with ink.  This is my second painting of this scene.  I love the hill, with the gorgeous cottages of different styles and sizes running away from the viewer, and the soft Dorset countryside beyond.  Sadly, the first sold too quickly and so now I have painted a second.  It's exactly the same scene, but the picture is larger although I don't know that it's better.

PRICE:  Given to owner of the house

ARTIST'S OBSERVATIONS:  Watercolour and pen.  As so often happens when painting on location in France, it is memories of warmth and a feeling of well-being - I was participating in an exhibition, and when things were quiet I spent my time painting the house in front of me.  I just loved the vines trailing over an old pergola by the front door.  So very French!  Although I no longer have the painting, I still have the image and it brings back a moment in time.

ARTIST'S OBSERVATIONS:  Watercolour and pen.  So very typical of French windows throughout the country - old wooden shutters, lace curtains and flowers in window boxes.  This was painted a few years ago now and I think at the time I was trying to perfect "net curtains".  For me it is very evocative of France.

MOUNT SIZE:  400 x 280mm in pale cream

PRICE: SOLD

ARTIST'S OBSERVATIONS:  Watercolour, watercolour ground and ink.  This is the second time I have attempted this scene and I think it has been much more successful than my first attempt.  I managed this time to get the perspective just about spot on - don't look too closely!  I used watercolour ground to try to get texture in the stone nearest to the viewer, and I like the colours washing from the flowers, and foliage.  The steps, which strongly attracted me to the composition also worked well.

ARTIST'S OBSERVATIONS:  Mixed media.  I have used a variety of techniques to produce this painting - mainly watercolour, but also watercolour ground and masking fluid for texture and a small amount of Brusho to add a little burst of colour.  For once I have not worked into it in pen as I think it is fine without.  I find it a very calm little picture.

Wimborne Minster from East Street

TITLE: Wimborne Minster from East Street

IMAGE SIZE: 200 x 280 mm

MOUNT SIZE: 300 x 400 mm

PRICE: SOLD  (Was raffled for Blandford Art Society funds August 2017)

ARTIST'S OBSERVATIONS: Watercolour and pen.  This is my first attempt at painting the Minster.  I have no real desire to paint it in its entirety, but find it more interesting in its surroundings within the town. I suspect that this may be the first of many such paintings, although perspective rears its ugly head and can be a bit of a nightmare!  I like the brick buildings which surround the Minster, they add colour and texture. I am torn with being true to the colours of the buildings as they are, and the temptation of adding a little more brickwork here and there.  Something I shall have to sort out in later studies.

SIZE OF IMAGE:  200mm x 300 mm

SIZE OF MOUNT AND COLOUR:  300mm x 400mm in white

PRICE: SOLD

ARTIST'S OBSERVATIONS:  Although this is not a particularly great composition, with the tree much too central, and the painting much too tight in style, I like it because it brings back great memories of a Scottish trip I did with my husband a great many years ago now.  The Plockton Hotel gave us a warm welcome and apart from drinking some very passable wine, I consumed two helpings of Cullen Skink (fish soup) and a freshly baked roll, one straight after the other it was so good!  We then watched seals from the shore - with a wonderful background of rugged hills.  It had its first gallery outing at the Gallery Upstairs, Upton recently, and out of the blue a lady, who had been admiring my work, said she knew Plockton well - this was a great surprise to me as I nearly hadn't painted it thinking that no-one would have any idea of where it was!  Just goes to show, paint what pleases you and someone will recognise it!

SIZE OF MOUNT AND COLOUR:  300mm x 400mm in white

PRICE: £95.00 Plus P&P

ARTIST'S OBSERVATIONS:  I don't know why I am so fascinated by Wimborne Minster, probably because it is visible from just about everywhere in the town.  It lends itself to rich colours, and there is quite a lot of detail which makes it interesting, if sometimes tedious thinking about how much should go in. I have let the colours flow, which then allows me to highlight the runs of paint to add interest.
