Swanage waterfront old and new

TITLE:  Swanage waterfront old and new

SIZE:  IMAGE:  300 x 210mm  MOUNT:  480 x 400 mm - off-white

PRICE:  £165.00 Plus P & P.

ARTIST'S OBSERVATIONS:  This was painted during the Corona Virus epidemic and was one of the first paintings I felt able to settle to, due to the uncertainty of everything.  A friend and I had visited Swanage on a lovely day in late winter and I was very taken with the relatively new houses against the old sea wall and the remains of an old pier.  It was painted twice before this version came about.  While I loved the patterns made by the buildings, their windows annd balconies, I was also fascinated by how the reflections might look on a clear, calm day.  By the time I had finished the housing for the third time I had had enough and I won't be revisiting it again any time soon!

Reflections of Old Harry

TITLE:  REFLECTIONS OF OLD HARRY

SIZE:  430 x 300 mm  WITH MOUNT:  560 x 450 mm of white

PRICE:  £250.00 Plus P & P.

ARTIST'S OBSERVATIONS:  Boring or not, Old Harry is one of my muses.  I find the shape of the rocks fascinating, with all their fissures and different colouration.  This particular angle was painted twice;  my first attempt falling at the final hurdle, the sea.  It was almost finished when I realised some element of the reflections weren't right, and I had the feeling I could do better - so back to the drawingboard and what you see is the end result.  To date, mid August 2020, this is my most successful painting of reflections.  I love this picture, and it currently sits on the wall in my lounge where it still pleases me when I look at it.  Not many of my paintings do that for me!!

Dorset Coastline

TITLE:  Dorset Coastline

IMAGE SIZE:  230mm x 280mm

MOUNT SIZE:  300mm x 400mm

PRICE:  SOLD during Dorset Art Weeks

ARTIST'S OBSERVATIONS:  Watercolour and ink.  This is the second time I have tried to paint this particular scene, the first attempt was a bit of a disaster and it ended up as a card!  I wanted to move away painting in too realistic a way and enjoy the shapes that are often suggested in landscapes, whether its paths through fields or plough lines, etc.  I am quite pleased with the outcome and have tried to tie up all the various colours used by working them into the grass at the bottom.

CARDS:  Handmade cards available in square or oblong format.

Old Harry Rocks

TITLE: Old Harry Rocks, Dorset

IMAGE SIZE:  210mm x 295mm

MOUNT SIZE:  300mm x 400mm

PRICE:  SOLD during Dorset Art Weeks

ARTIST'S OBSERVATIONS:  I had great fun doing this.  It is really part of series of 3 recent paintings set on the Dorset Coast.  All 3 are iconic scenes, but I didn't want to paint them too figuratively, therefore there is geometric pattern to depict the rough hewn rock, which, in fact do have those shapes, if not necessarily the colour!

Lulworth coastline Dorset

TITLE:  Lulworth coastline, Dorset

PICTURE SIZE:  300 mm x 220 mm

MOUNT SIZE:  400 mm x 300 mm Antique White

PRICE:  £95.00 Plus P&P

ARTIST'S OBSERVATIONS:  This is the latest in my Dorset coastline series, and I am really enjoying it.  Dorset is a county rich in beautiful coastline and there is a wealth of opportunities for painting.  Indeed it has probably been painted by just about every local artist numerous times, but I have the advantage, at the moment, of seeing it with new eyes and I love it.  This is a watercolour, and although the watercolour technique used is not taxing in any way, I have enjoyed finding all the patterns and colours presented by this amazing coast.

Durdle Door from Swyre Head

TITLE:  Durdle Door from Swyre Head

SIZE OF IMAGE:  300mm x 230mm

SIZE OF MOUNT:  400mm x 300mm

PRICE:  £95.00 Plus P&P  Currently hanging in The Old Chapel Gallery, Abbotsbury and if sold there will be a 35% fee for the gallery.

ARTIST'S OBSERVATIONS:  This is my fifth watercolour representation of the beautiful Dorset coastline - I am beginning to know the geography of the coast much better since starting this exercise!  I am particularly pleased with Durdle Door this time, it stands out nicely from the sea and the surrounding cliffs.  I think I may have one or two more in me, but I am itching to try another technique - still watercolour - so maybe not that many.

Arish Mell, Jurassic Coast

TITLE:  Arish Mell, Jurassic Coast

IMAGE SIZE:  200mm x 300mm

MOUNT SIZE:  300mm x 400mm in white

PRICE:  GIVEN AS A PRESENT

ARTIST'S OBSERVATIONS:  This was painted from a photograph in summer 2016 and I am very proud of it.  There are occasions when I am unable to take pictures of places I would like to paint, so I find one taken by a local photographer that inspires and excites me and ask their permission.  In this case the photographer was Steve Major who is a member of Dorset Landscapes on Facebook and I am a great admirer of his work.  As some of you may know, since arriving in Dorset I have fallen in love with Dorset's chalk coastline and have painted quite a few - personally I think this is one of my best, as the patterns of the cliffs and sea work and so does the colouring.

Man of War Bay

TITLE: Man of War Bay

IMAGE SIZE: 200mm x 300mm

MOUNT SIZE:  300mm x 400mm

PRICE:  £95.00 Plus P&P

ARTIST'S OBSERVATIONS:  This was one of the last coastal scenes I painted in summer 2016 - the photo was taken late evening by photographer David Thompson whose work I greatly admire - isn't it funny that we artists admire the work of photographs, and vice versa, and simply because we are, in general, unable to get into each others' shoes!  I loved the golden shades of the late sun still catching the cliffs - haven't got it quite right, but will maybe try again some time.

Man of War Bay from beach

TITLE:  Man of War Bay from the beach

SIZE OF IMAGE: 300 x 200mm

SIZE AND COLOUR OF MOUNT: 500 x 400mm in white

PRICE:  SOLD

CARDS:  Handmade cards available on request.

ARTIST'S OBSERVATIONS:  This scene was painted during Summer 2017 with a great deal of pleasure.  It was painted from a photograph supplied by David Faulkner who kindly gave me his permission to try to capture a little of the delightful, calm scene across the bay.  I loved the way the sea started off deep and aquamarine and gradually changed to pale browns and yellows as it gradually came forward and onto the beach.  I loved the shapes made by the water, reflections and stones beneath the surface.  Sadly, it sold too quickly, so wasn't able to enjoy it for myself.  I think that this is one scene that I will paint again for the sheer love of it.  Shortly after this was sold, I was encourage to submit a picture of the Dorset Coastline to be displayed aboard the Brittany Ferries vessel sailing out of Poole.  A copy of this painting was chosen, so travelled many times from Poole to France and back!  I have also had a canvas copy made of it, although the lightness of the colours are not quite the same.

Stairhole, Dorset coast

TITLE:  Stairhole, Dorset coast

SIZE OF IMAGE:  240mm x 240mm

SIZE AND COLOUR OF MOUNT: 400mm x 400mm

PRICE: £75.00 plus P&P

ARTIST'S OBSERVATIONS:  This is a slightly unusual angle of Stairhole, a really spectacular piece of the Dorset coastline.  I used a Canson watercolour paper, with a "snowy surface", which highlights any granulation taking place.  It has a rough surface, which is unusual for me, but it doesn't deaden the colours.  I was particularly fascinated by the water seen coming through the rocks.

Lulworth Cove I

TITLE:  Lulworth Cove I

SIZE OF IMAGE:  300mm x 200mm

SIZE AND COLOUR OF MOUNT:  500mm x 300mm in white

PRICE:  £150.00

ARTIST'S OBSERVATIONS:  This is an image which I found fascinating, especially the sea and the sky.  I painted it quickly over about a day, and was really excited out how it was going.  When I walked away from it and came back I saw it in a slightly different light and thought the sea overtook the cliffs and hills and was a little disappointed.  So saying I started on version II!  Have now decided, looking at the two pictures side by side, I actually prefer my first version as the sky is more interesting.

Stair hole, Dorset III

TITLE:Stair Hole, Dorset III

IMAGE SIZE:  280mm x 20mm

MOUNT SIZE & COLOUR:  500mm x 400mm double mount in white

PRICE:  £195.00 plus P&P

ARTIST'S DESCRIPTION:  This is a part of the Dorset coastline which fascinates me as I am drawn to the structure of the rocks and the patterns they make.  In this painting you can quite clearly see where the rock face on either side of the opening is different.  I prefer the right hand side - it's easier to  portray.  The sea, once again, interested me and I think I am slowly refining my painting of water in a way that satisfies my need for pattern.  There may be one more picture of this particular coastal feature to come.

Reflections of Old Harry Rocks

TITLE:  Reflections of Old Harry Rocks

SIZE:  Image: 380mm x 280mm Mount:  Off white 550mm x 45mm

PRICE:  £350.00 including P & P.

ARTIST'S OBSERVATIONS:  I have been painting this coastline for a few years now and I think this might be my best attempt yet of Old Harry Rocks.  I am often inspired by other, more experienced artists, and it pushes me to attempt new things, particularly with the sea.  This is the result of such inspiration, and while one could say it's time to stop painting this stunning landmark, maybe not quite yet for me!

Lulworth Cover - letterbox

TITLE:  Lulworth Cove - letterbox

SIZE:  Image: 380mm x 165mm  Mount: Off white 530mm x 330mm

PRICE: £195.00 plus P & P.

ARTIST'S OBSERVATIONS:  Once again an inlet in the Dorset coast which brings me great joy when I paint it.  The rock formations are so striking and the sea seems to change colour and shape each time I look at it (as sea does, of course!)

Old Harry at High Tide

TITLE:  Old Harry at high tide

IMAGE SIZE:  260mm x 260mm

MOUNT SIZE:  400mm x 400mm  MOUNT COLOUR:  White

PRICE:  £165.00 including P&P

ARTIST'S OBSERVATIONS:  I always seem to return to my muse!  Its nuances change constantly and so I am drawn back again and again.

This painting is one of a pair.  I wanted to paint Old Harry when the sun was on the cliffs which reflected in the water in an interesting way.  It didn't turn out entirely to plan mainly because, despite my best efforts I lost myself in the reflections.  Despite that, I like the picture, the colours used and the flowers in the foreground.

IMAGE SIZE:  260mm x 260mm

MOUNT SIZE:  400mm x 400mm  MOUNT COLOUR:  White

PRICE:  £195.00 including P&P

ARTIST'S OBSERVATIONS:  This is part of a pair.  Once again Old Harry calls me back, and this picture is in slightly more sombre tones due to the time of day and, of course, the tide.  I really enjoyed this painting as it was showing Harry in a slightly different way.  I enjoyed the fact that more of the shingle was showing - it felt a little more sophisticated in some manner.  When I look through the back copies of all my paintings, this is where I started out when I first arrived in Dorset some 7 years' ago and where I often return.  Whether I'm getting any better is a mute point, but each time something different appears.
